Rents in Sofia, Burgas and Varna have seen a marked rise in recent months, a property manager is telling me. Has to do with the steady growth of property prices, he explains. Those who have not solved the above dilemma might be worried, or am I wrong?

I agree with Marion. We bought and moved into a property west of Veliko Tarnovo 15 months ago and have integrated well. We came to live in Bulgaria. We were welcomed into the village although some locals studied us as though we were zoo specimens at first. Another British couple have recently bought here and are now permanent residents too. It’s nice to have someone with a common language around occasionally to share experiences and information and to chat to easily but neither we nor them want to live in a mini England.
The people in our village don’t speak English so we are working hard on our Bulgarian to improve our conversations with them. We are enjoying our new life here and socialise with our Bulgarian friends despite the language differences. I think if there is a large British community around you it would be very easy not to struggle too much with the language and not integrate a great deal. There are lots of examples of this in Spain with big British communities and people who have been there years and still don’t speak the language.

I live in a village just north of Varna, My husband and I were the first permament English people here. We have now got four English people here permanently. We have totally intigrated into the village life and our neighbours are wonderful. The people in the village have been very helpful and when my Husband died in April so many of them came to the funeral and expressed their sorrow. I have been going to school to improve my Bulgarian as not many villagers speak any English and you feel stupid smiling all the time. It is nice to speak to some English people but we came here to be in Bulgaria not England. I think more people should think why they came here and not try to make it like England.
